While BIA is not nearly as accurate as the DEXA technology, it is consistent in its measurements. Even if the scale overestimates or underestimates your body-fat percentage, it is consistent enough to accurately tell you if your body-fat percentage is increasing or decreasing.

By tracking the trends in the measurements it generates, you will be able to get an accurate reading of the amount of body fat you gain or lose based on the initial reading from the machine. For example, suppose in reality your body-fat percentage is 15 percent, but the machine tells you it is 17 percent. If your body fat drops a percentage point, the machine will then tell you that it is 16 percent.

While this number is inaccurate, the machine is correct in indicating your progress, in that your body-fat percentage has dropped by 1 percentage point. Getting a consistent reading of your body-fat percentage relies heavily on obtaining your measurement at the same time of day. The manufacturers suggest that you only take your measurement in the evening with an empty bladder before going to bed.
